NBA Draft updates:

Stephen Curry has canceled the rest of his workouts, seeing as he’s pretty much a lock either for the Wizards at #5 or the Knicks at #8; Tyler Hansbrough said in a radio interview that he thinks he could go higher than 12th; the Bobcats are auctioning off Sean May’s Unlimited Applebee’s card in order to pay their Lottery pick; and Brandon Jennings — who is always blunt and honest and will make some enemies in the NBA because of it — let everybody know he thinks Ricky Rubio is overrated. “I think I’m a better player than he is,” Jennings was quoted in the Sacramento Bee. “I can shoot the ball better than he can, you know the only time I have seen him do something is when he has a homerun pass or something like that. I think the dude is just all hype.” … Have you seen the new LeBron muppet commercial where he hits “2010″ on the weight bench with Kobe’s #24 in the background? Clearly it’s a nod to ‘Bron preparing to face Kobe in next year’s Finals, but some people took it as an attempted hint that LeBron is thinking of signing with the Lakers next summer. Which brought up a question of whether ‘Bron would actually sign with the Clippers.

Ps: Just to get this straight, if you play for the Lakers, you play in Los Angeles. If you play for the Clippers, you play for the Clippers.

Cavs 90, Magic 103 (Game 6)

What a crazy night in Orlando. Everywhere you went all you seen where blue jerseys. Every bar, wing place, downtown, wal-mart lol and even out side of the Amway arena was packed with fans. I only saw one Lebron jersey tonight and she got laughed at after the game lol. I'm proud of the magics! They looked mighty great tonight.

I gave up on these playoffs so many times because of the bullshit calls and out come of games but now i'm liking it. SO!! to the dear NBA cut the Lebron and kobe commercials out (even tho the one with the power cracks me up) lol. It's Superman's turn. MVP my butt, that Lebron did not prove he deserved it. KOBEEE Muthafuck** BRYANT should have got it. Even tho I'm excited for Orlando I'm gonna need my KOBE to whoop that ass. =]

The mainstream media wants Kobe vs. LeBron in the Finals. It’d be a dream even better than last year’s Celtics-Lakers rivalry. If the game’s two most marketable stars meet in the Finals, imagine how the TV ratings will skyrocket.

But a Carmelo vs. LeBron matchup could be just as compelling, even if it didn’t create as much buzz. There’s a real history between those two guys - from their matchup in high school on national TV, to their part in the ‘03 Draft class. Plus, they would go to war with each other every time down the court. It’d be an epic battle.

Head over to High School Hoop, where they’ve got that classic Oak Hill vs. St. Vincent-St. Mary high school game. LeBron throws a behind-the-back pass in the exact same fashion that he still does. ‘Melo - whose hair is out of control - hammers a crazy one-handed dunk that the video replays. It’s great footage.

//The 15 Best Performances of the Playoffs//

When Carmelo doesn’t even bother to flick his wrist after releasing a jumper, you know it’s trouble. When he laughs after drilling three’s, you know there’s little that the defense can do to hold him down. Anthony was truly in the mythic zone at one point during last night’s game, showing shades of his 33-point quarter. If he was able to get a bucket when L.O. blocked his floater from the first hash at the 5:22 mark, we might be saying that this was the definitive best all-around performance in the playoffs thus far.

It was one of the most efficient performances of the playoffs - ‘Melo made 14-20 shots, 70% FG (4-5 3FG) for 39 points. And on D he was working like a dog, making Kobe run through the equivalent of a football obstacle course to get free.

“It was a lot of fun, he’s a bull down there,” Bryant said. “I am a little out of my weight class, but I’ll give it my best shot.”

There’s no doubt that this game - despite being in a losing effort - belongs in the class of the greatest performances in the ‘09 playoffs. Here are the other games in that group:

* LeBron’s 47-point (15-25 FG, 5 three’s), 12-rebound, 8-assist Game 3 win over Atlanta
* Rajon Rondo’s 28-point (12-22 FG), 11-assists, 8-rebound Game 6 win over Chicago
Take this game over his three triple-doubles thus far, because he carried Boston to this win, accounting for 6 of Boston’s 13 points in OT.
* Derrick Rose’s 36-point (12-19 FG), 11-assist Game 1 win over Boston
* Ray Allen’s 51-point (18-32 FG, 9 three’s) Game 6 loss to Boston
* Ben Gordon’s 42-point (14-24 FG, 6 three’s) Game 2 loss to Boston
* Brandon Roy’s 42-point (15-27 FG), 7-rebound Game 2 win over Houston
Roy deserves bonus points for Ron Artest’s post-game compliment, saying that “Brandon Roy is the best player I’ve played against.”
* Dirk’s 44-point (14-25 FG), 13-rebound Game 4 win over Denver
* Dwight Howard’s 23-point, 22-rebound (10 offensive boards), 3-block Game 6 win over Boston
* Kobe’s 40-point (16-27 FG, 2 three’s), 6-rebound, 3-assist Game 2 win over Houston
* Kobe’s 40-point (13-28 FG, 2 three’s), 6-rebound, 4-assist Game 1 win over Denver
* Aaron Brooks‘ 34-point (12-20 FG, 4 three’s), 4-assist Game 4 win over L.A.
* Chauncey Billups‘ 36-point (10-15 FG, 8 three’s), 8-assist Game 1 win over New Orleans
* Dwyane Wade’s 41-point (11-23 FG), 5-rebound, 0-turnover Game 6 win over Atlanta
* Tony Parker’s 43-point (18-29 FG, 2 three’s), 5-rebound, 3-assist, 4-steal Game 3 loss to Dallas

It’s hard to argue with Ray’s 51-point outing. But I’d say that Chauncey’s Game 1 demolition of the Hornets, LeBron’s 47-point destruction of Atlanta, and even ‘Melo’s effort in last night’s loss are right up there too.

That's Fine

In just his sixth year in the NBA, LeBron James has won his first MVP award. En route to leading his team to a League best 66-16 record, James averaged 28.4 points, 7.6 rebounds and 7.2 assists, while taking his defensive game to a whole new level. The MVP race proved to be a blowout, with James receiving 109 out of a possible 121 first-place votes. Last years’ winner, Kobe Bryant, finished second in voting, yet only received a mere two first-place votes.

The announcement of the award was held in a place close to James’ heart. In the very gym where he first made his name, James accepted the award today at St. Vincent-St. Mary High School in Akron. “This is a place where all my dreams started and where I thought they could become real,” James said of his alma mater. Making the trip to the ceremony a reflective one, James took his Ferrari on the scenic tour through his hometown’s backstreets. “Today I decided to go the long route - to go back and hit some of those old roads where I used to walk. … To go back to some places that you grew up in brings back memories, and to be sitting up here today being the MVP of the NBA is like a complete 360. It’s like, ‘Wow.’ But you look back and, if it wasn’t for those roads - if it wasn’t for Silver St. and the boondocks, and all those places that I grew up in, I wouldn’t be up here today.”

In accepting the award, James delivered an exceptional speech, showcasing the poise that has made him a worldwide superstar. He was also quick to credit his teammates for their contribution to his success. He joked, “If you’ve ever seen the movie Friday, it’s like ‘It’s going to be like the both of ours, but I’m gonna keep it at my house.’ That’s what it really is. It’s me and my teammates’, but I’m gonna keep it at my house.”

LeBron also made it clear that his family and friends have played invaluable roles in his development as a player and as a person.

LeBron’s on Jason Richardson

One video made by a Cavs fan shows the angle of LeBron’s block on Jason Richardson so it looks like it was all ball (and incredibly embarrassing…) But the other video asserts that LeBron invented the “crab-block” last night…

LeBron’s 52-Point Triple-Double

Though the crew over at Fanhouse is arguing that LeBron’s 9th rebound really should have been credited to Ben Wallace, which would have left him short of the triple-double, it was still a flat-out bonkers performance. As LeBron said before the game about Kobe’s 61-point night, it’s all just about witnessing “greatness.”

Rick Barry on LeBron

Notorious cranky-pants Rick Barry didn’t pull any punches when he was recently asked by ComcastSportsNet about LeBron James’s game:

“He’s got major flaws in his game,” the Warriors great said in an interview airing Wednesday night. “He’s six years into the NBA. How can a man six years into the NBA with his talent have a major flaw in his shot? How can he not use screens effectively? . . . I watch the game very carefully, he doesn’t use screens effectively and this is not LeBron’s fault. It’s the fault of the people who are teaching him. … There is no doubt in my mind that LeBron, if shown these things, would do them, because he wants to be a great player. He wants to win a championship. As great as he is, he should be better.”

True, Rick’s being more critical of the Cavs’ coaching staff than of LeBron, and he may even be right about LeBron’s “flaws,” but still - he sounds like a jealous old man.
